Chicago Executive Leadership Academy

When it began, the Chicago Executive Leadership Academy (CELA) was a pioneering effort to create the nation’s first district-based academy for managers of principals, one modeled after the Broad Superintendent’s Academy. This program supported the recruitment, development and mentoring of a critical layer of management at CPS: Network leadership. CELA consisted of intensive leadership development combined with mentoring from leading national superintendents. Following a single year supported by The Fund, CPS absorbed the cost for an expansion of CELA during the 2012-13 school year. CPS further expanded the program during the 2013-14 school year as the primary source of professional development for CPS principals.
Impact
  • In the first year of the program, 29 managers of principals participated.
