About Anthony (Tony) Miller

Tony Miller is a co-founding partner and Chief Operating Officer of The Vistria Group (“Vistria”), a Chicago-based private equity firm. Vistria makes controlling equity investments in mid-sized companies operating in the education, healthcare, and financial services sectors. Vistria targets companies with at least $10 million in earnings and with enterprise values between $50 million and $250 million. Tony is involved in all aspects of Vistria’s business including investment sourcing, investment management, fundraising and firm management.

Before launching The Vistria Group, Tony was the Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer at the U.S. Department of Education. In his role, Tony oversaw day-to-day operations for the broad range of management, policy and program functions that comprise the ~$77 billion Cabinet-level agency’s operations. In addition to his operational responsibilities, Tony represented the U.S. Government at various education and workforce development international forums pertaining to China, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Ecuador, Brazil and Russia.

Prior to his Presidential Appointment, Tony spent his entire career in the private sector. Tony was a Director with Silver Lake, a global leader in technology investing, with over $12 billion in combined assets under management. Before joining Silver Lake, Tony was Executive Vice President Operations at LRN, a market leading provider of governance, risk, compliance and ethics eLearning software products and services. Before taking on an operating executive role, Tony was a Partner with McKinsey & Company, serving healthcare and technology companies throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.

Born in Philadelphia, Tony grew up in Peoria, Illinois. He received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University and M.B.A. from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business where he completed his studies at Stanford’s Japan Center for Technology and Innovation. He serves on the Board of Chicago’s Academy of Urban School Leadership and the Hope Street Group, a national nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding economic opportunity and prosperity for all Americans. Tony and his wife Carole reside in Chicago.
