Watch Educators in Action at The Fund’s Summer Design Program
October 29, 2013
As part of The Innovative Educator Network, The Fund launched the Summer Design Program in 2013 to engage the best educators citywide in solving academic achievement problems in their schools through deliberate use of time, technology and talent.
The Summer Design Program’s first cohort included 16 teams of three to five educators (principal and teachers) from traditional, charter and turnaround public schools throughout Chicago. These educators participated in a series of workshops designed to clarify a school-based academic challenge, identify new or known solutions in Chicago and elsewhere, and plan a classroom, grade-level or schoolwide effort for implementation during the 2013-2014 school year.
At the culmination of the six-week process, and after all teams presented their ideas to educators, stakeholders and education technology experts, all teams were granted investments to implement their innovations. Five of these teams were granted full implementation investments and will receive additional support from The Fund and other experts during the 2013-14 school year.

The Fund also worked with LEAP Innovations to create additional funding and growth opportunities by securing a regional Next Generation Learning Challenge grant – Breakthrough Schools: Chicago. Through Breakthrough Schools, several Summer Design Program participants will apply to receive further support to transform their entire school.
