Kristie Langbehn is beginning her sixth year as the principal of Casals School of Excellence (Casals), where she has led a tremendous turnaround effort in academic performance, school culture and overall stability. Kristie started her first year as principal with a team of four veteran and 26 brand-new teachers, and persevered through low reading scores, high poverty and a teacher’s strike. Six years later, Casals achieved Level 1+ status on the district’s School Quality Rating Policy (SQRP) and students are averaging in the 97th percentile on Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) reading growth.
Casals serves students in the West Humboldt Park community and emphasizes a college-bound and achievement-focused culture. Kristie has worked relentlessly with her school staff to instill a student mindset that understands the value of education, and inspires ownership over individual academic achievement. In addition, Casals acts as a safe space in the neighborhood and an environment where students can feel comfortable engaging with their peers.
Kristie previously worked at Frazier Preparatory Charter Academy Charter School, before taking her position as the founding principal of Casals.
