The Fund Launches 2015 Principal Engagement Survey
Data will be publicly reported to communicate insights, needs of Chicago principals
Today, The Chicago Public Education Fund (The Fund) invited all of Chicago’s public school principals to participate in a Principal Engagement Survey to gauge their experience during the 2014-15 school year. To ensure smooth logistics and confidentiality, The Fund is partnering with the National Business Research Institute to administer the survey.
Last year, hundreds of principals participated in the inaugural Principal Engagement Survey; The Fund published the results in “School Leadership in Chicago: A Baseline Report” this spring. The report revealed key insights. Specifically, principals surveyed indicated a need for:
– Tailored, streamlined professional development opportunities and tools. Sixty-five percent of principals who responded requested more professional development opportunities designed to meet their individual needs and those of their schools.
– Practical tools to increase the quality of teaching and learning in their schools, especially those that support instruction and implementation of the Common Core State Standards and strategic budgeting. Of the principals who responded, 57 percent wanted more support in transitioning to the Common Core State Standards.
– Greater flexibility in their ability to implement instructional leadership practices that will most benefit their schools, educator teams and communities. Eighty-eight percent of principals who responded cited instructional leadership as a top priority, but many noted that compliance functions regularly pull them away from this important work.
“Understanding the perspectives of principals in Chicago’s public schools is more important today than ever before,” said Heather Y. Anichini, Chief Executive Officer of The Fund. “The best among these leaders partner actively with their teachers, parents, communities and students to provide a world-class public education even in the most challenging circumstances. We look forward to hearing from them and to continuing to take action on their input.”
