The Chicago Public Education Fund supports 2019 mayoral transition
Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot released her transition report today, which includes a section on education. The Chicago Public Education Fund (The Fund) served as the pro-bono partner of the 60-member Education Transition Committee chaired by Niketa Brar, the executive director at Chicago United for Equity; Aarti Dhupelia, the vice-president of Undergraduate Education and dean of the Undergraduate College at National Louis University; Sybil Madison, director of the Center for Excellence in Computer Science at Northwestern University; and Sylvia Puente, the executive director at the Latino Policy Forum.
The Fund’s role in the transition included facilitating three meetings of the education committee, analyzing the 123 memos submitted by the transition committee, releasing a public survey in five languages to gain stakeholder input, coordinating feedback from multiple sources, and supporting the four co-chairs in compiling and revising the final report.
The report begins with the mayor-elect’s values of Transparency, Diversity & Inclusion, Equity, Accountability and Transparency. The Education section of the report includes six initiatives. Three focus on young people in particular stages: early childhood, K-12 and postsecondary. Three initiatives involve more cross-cutting issues. They are: Inclusive Voice for Equity and Impact, Diverse Talent and Equitable Funding. The committee also created a seventh cross-functional initiative, which can be found near the end of the report: Community Schools and Coordinated Citywide Learning.
The Fund was honored to support the new mayor and her team as they begin their work with the broader education community in Chicago.
Materials for all three meetings, the memos submitted to the transition committee and other materials from the transition are all publicly available here.
