Top teachers and leaders from 26 Chicago public schools selected to inform strategy and investment efforts at leading local philanthropy
February 25, 2014 – The Chicago Public Education Fund (The Fund) today announced the selection of 26 educators to join the 2014 Educator Advisory Committee. Now in its second year, the Educator Advisory Committee is an opportunity for proven educators to work alongside peers to address shared challenges and inform The Fund’s strategy. The Fund invests in talented principals and effective educator teams to reinvent classroom learning, with the ultimate goal of creating a critical mass of great public schools in Chicago.
Advisory Committee members will be offered professional development opportunities based on interest and need throughout the year. In addition, they will participate in quarterly conversations with The Fund team to inform the ongoing investment strategy for Fund 4 – a $20 million, five year investment effort to improve educational outcomes for one in three students in public schools across the city.
“As we look to create solutions to drive student learning, we must ask for the input of those who know students best – our principals and teachers,” said Heather Y. Anichini, CEO and President of The Fund. “We created the Educator Advisory Committee to facilitate informed discussions about the support and solutions needed in our schools. We are grateful to our newest Committee members and excited about all we can accomplish together.”
Advisory Committee members were selected from a diverse group of candidates, many of whom were nominated by Chicago Public Schools, the Chicago Teachers Union, and leading charter and education non-profits. New members are both principals and teachers, who, on average, have been teaching or leading schools for nearly 10 years. They are educators from district, public charter, and turnaround schools, and teach nearly every grade level and subject.
“The job of an educator is so focused and outcomes driven that it is often easy to feel isolated,” said Pat Baccellieri, principal at Bateman Elementary School. “This opportunity will allow me to help The Fund, but also collaborate and work with my peers to address challenges and share best practices. I am grateful to The Fund for coordinating this effort and excited about its impact.”
Every member of the Advisory Committee receives a $1,000 grant to be applied towards their school. Sandra Carlson, principal of Gray Elementary School and 2013 Educator Advisory Committee participant, was able to use this investment to support Gray’s transition to full day kindergarten.
“To accommodate our schools transition to full day kindergarten, our classrooms and teachers were in need of more educational and recreational resources. With this investment from The Fund, we were able to expand our classroom libraries and play areas. I am grateful to The Fund not only for the opportunity to participate and engage with my peers across schools, but also for their generous contribution to our students.”
